Digipaks | Research

What is a Digipak?

Digipaks are usually made of card stock or paperboard and are often a gatefold, which can have one or more plastic cases for holding the CDs/DVDs inside. They often have spaces available to contain a booklet with information for the digipak including information for the music on the album. Digipaks are often used for special editions of CD albums or for CD Singles. There are also digipaks for DVDs however these are not often used as they tend to wear down quickly and the plastic holders inside of the digipaks are easy to crush or snap, and affecting the CD or DVD.

What makes a Digipak different?

Digipaks are often produced in conjunction with the mainstream plastic CD case for albums, and are sold for a higher price, however the option is still there for consumers to be able to buy the normal plastic CD case album. Many digipaks now include special features to accompany the album or single, examples of these could be a poster with cover art for the album or other art for the album, DVDs for the behind the scenes production of the album or a DVD of live performances by the artist. Digipaks are a way of selling to consumers, the art on the cover and inside of digipaks are often extended art of the normal CD package of the album, or in some cases, completely different art. This appeals to consumers because they feel that they are missing out on the special features if they were to buy the standard edition of the album, and some of the bigger fans of the artist may feel compelled to buy the digipak version of the CD.
