
Universal Music Group (UMG) is currently the largest music institution in the world and owns labels such as; The Island Def Jam Music Group, Capitol Music Group and Republic Records. All of which own some of the most successful artists in the world.

UMG is a subsidiary of the Paris based media conglomerate Vivendi and also owns Universal Music Publishing Group, which is the second largest music publishing company in the world.


The corporation was originally attached to the film studio Universal Pictures and was formed via a merge of two other music companies when Seagram purchased PolyGram and merged it with Universal Music Group in 1998. The artists that are a part of the Universal Music Group include Akon, Avicii, Black Eyed Peas, Nero, Noah and the Whale, The Killers etc.
