Mint Julep - To The Sea
The music video To The Sea, by Mint Julep, is very different to a lot of mainstream music videos in the way that the entire music video looks very different as the background of each shot moves side to side throughout. This technique is very interesting to watch, even though the visuals and this technique almost have no relevance to the lyrics of the song. The video is still very interesting to watch and similar to many other music videos, it demontrates one camera or editing technique all of the way through. The fact that the visuals don't link to the lyrics or title of the song does detract from the music however and this means that the video becomes more of a short film or just a demontration of this one technique. The aesthetic of the video is very stunning, and makes the whole thing very interesting to watch, the slow motion linked with freeze frames of different angles of the camera gives the video a very different look and almost a dreamy feel to the video.
I chose to look at this video because I was very interested in the technique that is used and I can see us using it in our production of the music video, although not for the entire video. It could be very difficult to pull off and if we were to do it incorrectly it would affect the final result massively. It is not definite that we will use this technique but the idea is there.
The dark look of the video is also very useful to look at, as the colours are still very prominent, as if the contrast has been increased, however the video is still able to maintain dark emotions throughout. The narrative shows that the girl is alone through the entire video, however she does not seem sad or convey negative emotions. This being said, the audience can still draw negative emotions from the acting and the style of colour grading, which is dark, yet colourful. Which may suggest that there is a deeper lying problem under the seemingly random events happening in the video.
From the performance of the actress in the video, it seems very amateur and is clearly not a well experienced actor, which can emphasise the need for a good/experienced actor or performer in the production of a music video. In my opinion, the video could have been made better with a more experienced actor/actress as it would have maybe conveyed a deeper meaning of the video (if there is one), and helped the audience understand the narrative slightly easier.
